Multiple Sclerosis occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the myelin that surrounds nerve fibers. The damaged myelin forms scar tissue, and impulses between nerves and the brain are interrupted. Most people with MS are diagnosed as adults, and more women are affected by the disease than men.

Sensation in Legs

Kayla Montgomery was diagnosed with MS at age 14. After Kayla felt tingling and numbness in her toes, her mother took her to a doctor, where an MRI revealed lesions on Kayla’s brain and spine. For eight months, Kayla could not feel her legs. When medication allowed her to feel her legs again, Kayla decided that she wanted to run as long as she was able to and joined her high school’s long-distance running team in North Carolina.

Soon, Kayla was one of the fastest runners on her team. Then she became one of the best young runners in the country. There was only one problem. As Kayla ran, her body temperature rose. Sufferers of MS experience symptoms more frequently when this happens. Therefore, Kayla could not stop on her own, and could not feel her legs after a race.

In this video, we learn more about this determined young woman, and we see her compete in the state championship distance race.
