Why Scientists Don’t Like The Paleo Diet
While there are many people who are having amazing results with this diet, scientists worry about the fat factor. See, to consume meats of all kinds means that one is putting a great deal of fat into their bodies. As you know, fat clogs arteries and can cause heart attacks. A study was recently done using mice over a 15 week period fed with the principals of the Paleo diet. The University of Melbourne thought that the experience would be fun, but it actually turned out to be dangerous. The study used mice that were overweight and in the pre-diabetic category. They were split into two groups. The first group ate normally while the second group had a 60 percent fat increase and a carb count of roughly 20 percent.
Scientists were baffled after the eight week period concluded. The mice on the Paleo diet were fatter. In fact, they gained 15 percent more than the other mice. Their fat percent doubled from two to four. Another shocking find was that these mice were now gluten intolerant, which means they developed Celiac disease. The university concluded that a diet low in carbs and high in fat just doesn’t work.
Dieting Requires A Healthy Combination
Dieting can be as easy or as hard as you make it. To lose weight you need to create a deficit in calories. Consuming a pound of bacon and six eggs for breakfast is not going to give you a beach body anytime soon. The body needs fat, carbohydrates, sugar, salt, protein, fiber and a healthy portion of fruits and vegetables. The best way to lose weight is to eat things that are healthy in proper proportion. Some of the principals of the Paleo diet are correct, plant based is always best. However, consuming high amounts of fat in hopes of losing fat is just ludicrous.
The other problem with the low carb diet fad is that people cannot stick with them because they are not realistic. It’s not sensible to say you will never eat bread again or have fruit. A well-balanced diet that watches fat and calories, as well as carbs, is how the battle is won.
